Developing and Refining Lessons: Planning Learning and Formative Assessment for Math College and Career Ready Standards

This resource provides guidance for teachers in the design of daily lessons that support student learning of the math college- and career- ready standards (CCRS). This resource emphasizes the formative assessment process in lesson planning and improvement, such as strategies to elicit evidence, responding to anticipated and unanticipated evidence, and providing feedback. Five planning tools are included in this resource. Although it can be used by itself, this resource draws on teacher learning and work from other resources in the CSAI series.

This tool is designed to be used in tandem with the “Lesson Planning with Formative Assessment” tool. Teachers use this tool to record and plan for varying levels of prior knowledge and experience, potential student challenges and responses, and language demands and opportunities.
Lesson Planning with Formative Assessment
Teachers use this tool to plan the learning experiences and evidence gathering strategies that will support student learning and formative assessment. This tool is designed to be used in tandem with the “Lesson Hot Spots” tool.
Teachers use this tool after the completion of a lesson in order to consider various features of the lesson and plan for future improvement.
