Supporting Students in Close Reading
Barbara Jones, Sandy Chang, Margaret Heritage, Glory Tobiason, and Joan Herman
This resource guides teachers in the process of instructional planning for close reading with students. It is one in a series produced by the Center for Standards and Assessment Implementation (CSAI). The series’ goal is to assist teachers and those who support teachers to plan teaching and learning for diverse learners from College and Career Ready Standards (CCRS).
The Text Cover Sheet provides a space for teachers to analyze a text, then identify and record for instructional purposes (1) the standards addressed; (2) reading purposes and text content; and (3) text and language challenges and connections.
The Selecting Text Tool, also found in the close reading resource, guides teachers in the process of selecting texts that provide appropriate levels of challenge for their students. Factors to consider include: age appropriateness, student interest level, complexity of ideas, text and sentence structure, vocabulary difficulty, and length of the text.
