Defense

Our simulation and game-based assessment and training R&D applies to a wide range of military solutions. This includes sensor-based marksmanship assessments and remediation, simulation-based formative and summative evaluations of Tactical Action Officer (TAO) performance, and automated assessment of game-based shipboard damage control operations.

We have developed innovative assessment tools supporting the Naval Education and Training Command’s Surface Warfare Officers School, which led to prestigious, back-to-back awards by the Association of Talent Development (ATD), formerly American Society for Training & Development (ASTD).

  • Navy Skill Decay Analysis

    Assessment, Technology

The U.S. Navy has identified that certain essential skills—pertaining to electronics and troubleshooting— deteriorate among some sailors between the time they complete “A” School (which teaches basic naval skills), and the time they enter “C” School (which teaches more advanced skills). To address this situation, CRESST has been working with the Navy to uncover new […]

  • Assessment of Navy Tactics: the Tactical Action Officer (TAO)

    Assessment, Technology

CRESST developed an assessment tool for the Multi-Mission Tactical Trainer (MMTT) used at the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) in Newport, RI. The trainer simulates a combat information center (CIC) where the ship employs its defensive and offensive systems. The CIC includes many watchstanders who provide data to the Tactical Action Officer (TAO). The assessment […]

  • Engineering Plant Technician Automated Assessment

    Assessment, Methodology, Technology

Working with Anthrotronix, Inc., the overall goal of this project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of integrating advanced multimodal interface technologies and advanced embedded performance assessment metrics within current and emergent naval engineering maintenance Virtual Environment (VE) training platforms. Anthrotronix’s advanced interface technologies will support visual, auditory, haptic, and olfactory modalities; and our advanced […]

  • Shiphandling Skills Automated Assessment

    Assessment, Methodology, Technology

In collaboration with the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS), in Newport, Rhode Island, CRESST is developing an automated assessment engine (AAE) capable of evaluating shiphandling skills as part of a larger Navy training initiative known as NSTAT (Navigation and Shiphandling Training and Assessment Tools). Despite its critical importance to the Navy, shiphandling training is becoming […]

  • Damage Control Skills Automated Assessment

    Assessment, Methodology, Technology

In a multi-year research project funded by the Office of Naval Research, CRESST developed a software architecture for automatically assessing cognitively complex tasks within games and simulations. The focus of this research was the development of a conceptual framework for automated performance assessment that can be generalized to a variety of domains. The goal was […]
